Too Much Negative Social Media?
2 Thessalonians 3:10-14 KJV: Spending more time gossiping on social media than being productive?

Instruct Those Who Would Hear
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
(Prov 9:7-10 KJV)
This one God loves us and was and is willing to give all to us. Not everyone understands this nor does everyone want to. There are times, after a person attempts to share the Good News that our God would have everyone receive, that one must shake the dust off of their feet and walk away. There are plenty of others yearning to hear the Good News of the kingdom through Jesus the Christ. They yearn for it so it would behoove us to ensure that they get to hear it.
God grant that the ears of all people be opened to hear this Good News and to receive it as a blessed promise to them through Jesus Christ our Lord and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Jesus The Bread Of Life
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
(John 6:32-35 KJV)
Jesus is the bread of life. Many of us have not been being fed very well this past year with all of the shut-downs and restrictions due to COVID. We have not been being fed with the Word who is Jesus the Christ nor have we been being fed with the Sacrament of his body and blood. So just a little reminder from Luther's Small Catechism found in the Book of Concord this morning that because of the restrictions we may have gotten out of the habit of hearing the Word and partaking in the Holy Sacrament and should get back into the habit.
Sacrament of the AltarAs the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household.01 What is the Sacrament of the Altar?02 Answer: It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, under the bread and wine, for us Christians to eat and to drink, instituted by Christ Himself.03 Where is this written?04 Answer: The holy Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul, write thus:
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread: and when He had given thanks, He brake it, and gave it to His disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.
After the same manner also He took the cup, when He had supped, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Take, drink ye all of it. This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the remission of sins. This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me.05 What is the benefit of such eating and drinking?06 Answer: That is shown us in these words: Given, and shed for you, for the remission of sins; namely, that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.07 How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things?08 Answer: It is not the eating and drinking, indeed, that does them, but the words which stand here, namely: Given, and shed for you, for the remission of sins. Which words are, beside the bodily eating and drinking, as the chief thing in the Sacrament; and he that believes these words has what they say and express, namely, the forgiveness of sins.09 Who, then, receives such Sacrament worthily?10 Answer: Fasting and bodily preparation is, indeed, a fine outward training; but he is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: Given, and shed for you, for the remission of sins.
But he that does not believe these words, or doubts, is unworthy and unfit; for the words For you require altogether believing hearts.
Hungry and thirsty? Jesus who is the bread of life will fill you for all of eternity.

Ask And Receive The Holy Spirit
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? (Luke 11:13 KJV)
What a great gift we receive when we receive the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit comes to us as a free gift from God. According to Luther's Small Catechism the third article of the Apostle's Creed affirms that even our faith is dependent upon the Holy Spirit.
3rd Article
Of Sanctification.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; one holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
What does this mean? — Answer.
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith; in which Christian Church He forgives daily and richly all sins to me and all believers, and at the last day will raise up me and all the dead, and will give to me and to all believers in Christ everlasting life. This is most certainly true.
Ask and you shall receive the Holy Spirit! Thanks be to God!

No Bearing False Witness; No Gossip
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
(Luke 12:1-4 KJV)
Do good to others. Do no harm in word or deed. It is too bad that there are those who would spread gossip (even if it may be partially true) to purposely put a bad light on someone's life. Gossip can destroy a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The explanation of the eighth commandment in Luther's Small Catechism reminds us that we are not to harm other; but, in all things to help them.
"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
What does this mean? — Answer.
We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything."
We can whisper behind someone's back and think it will never get back to the one that is being gossiped about. But, I have found that in most cases the gossip is found out and inevitably causes much turmoil and stress for the target of the gossip. Gossip shared in the darkness almost always brings more darkness to both the target of the gossip and the gossiper. It may be awhile before the person being gossiped about may find out about how they have been disrespected by the gossipers; but, don't be deceived. God knows all things we say or think whether it is good or bad.
Therefore; we ought not fear those who speak behind our backs to cause us harm. Words spoken in darkness will eventually be revealed by the light. Sooner or later the closet doors will open. Sooner or later the sun will come out and the truth will be known. But, for now it is enough that God knows the truth.
Do no harm. Speak in the light of day. Speak with integrity. Speak with truth. Live in the light of Christ.

No Understanding Without God The Spirit
"There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?"
(John 3:1-9 KJV)
Call them riddles. Call them mysteries. We can even call them conspiracy theories. There are things about life and faith we simply do not understand. I am not going to suggest that we resign our efforts to understand. Of course not. The search is on!
This coming Sunday congregations around the world will be celebrating Trinity Sunday. How to explain the Trinity is a challenge that isn't ever completely accomplished to our satisfaction. I have always enjoyed employing the Athanasian Creed as our confession of faith when I led worship on Trinity Sunday. I could not help but smile as I looked at the many shell-shocked faces who had just confessed this faith. Most of them seemed to have had no clue what the church teaches and what we believe. There were usually questions about why we believed and confessed all of that following the service as they were amazed by that confession that many of them had never heard before.
Nicodemus was amazed at the many miracles that Jesus performed. He was also a little surprised and confused when Jesus told him he had to be born again; born of water and of the Spirit if he wanted to see the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus response was don't be so surprised at this. "The wind blows where it will blow." And, it does. The Spirit blows where the Spirit will blow. The Spirit will enlighten those whom the Spirit will enlighten through the word of God.
The great mysteries of life in this world and in the Kingdom of God will never completely be solved in this life. But, whether or not we know everything about how the new life actually comes about; we know this much: it comes about because God our Father is the creator of all things visible and invisible; Jesus is our savior who died that all who would believe in him would receive forgiveness of sins and inherit places in the presence of God Almighty; the Holy Spirit who enlightens us that we might have faith in that which we are not able to see with our own eyes.
Nicodemus didn't understand everything. Neither do we need to understand all the intricate details of the workings of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We don't need to understand because by faith we know their reality.
In addition to the Athanasian Creed the Lutheran Church also teaches and confesses the Apostle's and the Nicene Creeds. In the third article of the Nicene Creed found in Luther's Small Catechism we teach and confess that without God the Holy Spirit enlightening us we cannot come to faith. Our faith is not something that we conjure up but is a gift from God.
"I believe in the Holy Ghost; one holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
This is most certainly true."
Our understanding of the totality of God is very limited. We cannot fathom all who God the Father and creator of all is; who or why God the Son was willing to sacrifice himself for us. But, regardless of our lack of understanding we are thankful that God the Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens us keeping us with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

What You Give; You Will Receive
"Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men."
(Rom 12:9-10, 11-18 KJV)
Live peaceable with others as much as is possible. Sometimes it is difficult to be at peace with others; especially with those who appear to be enemies. However, the word of the Lord reminds us that we are to bless those and do not curse those who persecute you. Scripture reminds us that what we put out will return to us. If we judge others we will be judged. If we despise and persecute others we too will be despised and persecuted. But, if we love others and strive to live with others in peace then we shall be loved and loved in peace. If we want others to see us in the best light then we ought also to put the best construction on who they are and what they may or may not have done.
We are sinful human beings and sometimes no matter how hard we try we do not always think or speak or act charitably regarding other. However, according to Luther's Small Catechism we teach that we are to put the best construction on everything that our neighbor says or does.
"The Eighth Commandment
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
What does this mean? — Answer.
We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything."
Do not dwell on the faults of those who hate you; but, pray that they might come to know peace; pray that they might learn to love as Christ loves them; be merciful as God is merciful. In doing so your enemy may in the end become your best ally and friend.
"But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."
(Luke 6:35-28)
Keep guard over what you think and say and do for what you do to others may well turn around and be done to you a thousandfold.
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Phil 4:8)
There are so many scripture verses that pertain to loving even our enemies I cannot possibly list them all in a blog. The bottom line is do good to others. No one needs the stress that comes with anger or hatred or vengeance either through the given of it or receiving of it. Live life in Christ! Live in peace!

Christ Is Everything!

| Tell Everyone About Jesus Who Saved Your Soul! |
"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." (Gal 2:20 KJV)
Not I; but, Christ in me. It is most reassuring to know that on the cross our sins have been wiped out and we have been given a new life. That new life is a life in Christ who abides in every believer.
At one time (not so much any more) I attended a lot of group meetings and Bible Studies. It would make me a bit irritated as we were asked to go around the table and tell everyone something about ourselves. It would make me uncomfortable because it is not and should not be about me. My story is not about what I have done or will do because I can do nothing without the abiding presence of Christ in me. All that we say and think and do should be about what Christ has done and continues to do for us and through us.
I use to visit an elderly Finnish lady who was homebound. We greeted one another when I entered her home and went directly to receiving the Sacrament of Communion together. When I had finished the blessing she would say: "Now what should we talk about Jesus?" She did not want small talk about what she or I or anyone else was doing. She wanted to talk about what Jesus had done for us and continued doing in the world around us. I often think of her and our talks about Jesus.
A song I've been listening to a lot lately is "Nobody" by Casting Crowns. It is a reminder that who we should want everybody to know is not us but Jesus and what he has done for us.
"Cause I'm just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus"
Luther's Small Catechism teaches regarding Baptism. It indicates that we and our egos should die daily so that life in Christ emerges. That new life does not occur without the abiding presence of Christ. I have printed what Baptism is from Luther's Small Catechism because many of us who have been told may have forgotten.
"What is Baptism?
Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God’s command and combined with God’s word.
Which is that word of God?
Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matt. 28:19)
What benefits does Baptism give?
It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.
Which are these words and promises of God?
Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16)
How can water do such great things?
Certainly not just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God’s word the water is plain water and no Baptism. But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. Paul says in Titus, chapter three: “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.” (Titus 3:5–8)
What does such baptizing with water indicate?
It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.
Where is this written?
St. Paul writes in Romans chapter six: 'We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.' (Rom. 6:4)"
The abiding presence of Christ is revealed in the new man that emerges. It is not we; but, Christ in us who is revealed and who does all things. We are nothing without Jesus.
But, we are, as the Great Commission tells us, to go and tell about Jesus and make disciples of all people. It is not about us. It is about Jesus! Go and tell!

Swearing: Using God's Name In Vain
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Exodus 20:7 KJV)
"The Second Commandment.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord, thy God, in vain.
What does this mean?-
-Answer.
We should fear and love God that we may not curse, swear, use witchcraft, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks."
I confess that every now and then my lips will release a word or maybe two or three that should not be spoken. I am very aware that I have sinned as soon as something slips out of my mouth that ought not to have.
It is troubling though, that so many do not even seem to recognize when they have taken God's name in vain. I know many love Him; but, for some reason they don't always recognize when they are speaking against Him. Sometimes, it needs to be brought to their attention.
Yes, sometimes I find myself asking others not to be swearing. No, I do not always ignore it when people take God's name in vain; when they blaspheme His Holy Name. I will ask them to please not take my God's name in vain; to not blaspheme against my God. I usually stress "my God" in attempts to make it clear that because of their language they have made it evident to me and others who might be around us that He is not their God; that they do not worship Him. If He were their God, they would not be using His name in such a manner and so very often.
There have been times when I've been in discussions (usually with younger people) and I've gotten responses like "OMG" or "Oh My G_ _!" (Father, forgive me for even writing it as an example.) My response to that is usually "I am not your God" and I walk away.
I find the language today atrocious. There is very little respect for one another and definitely not for God in many conversations. His name is thrown around like it was something cheap and disposable. It is even called upon when used to bully others; to persecute them.
I have also been known to use the phrase "speak with integrity" on rare occasions. Admittedly, the lies have to be pretty bad before I do that. Sometimes you have to let people know that if they want me others to understand what exactly is going on they will have to get their stories straight. Sometimes stories get so twisted, in order to justify one's own actions, that it can be difficult to glean the truth from the tale. This lack of truth-telling also blasphemes the Name of God when the one who is speaking claims to bear the name of Christ.
His Name is above all names and it is eternal. It ought not be used in rampages meant to hurt others or to justify our own sinful ways. It can and should be called upon for the healing of the nations. Use it wisely.
May the Lord our God bless the words of our lips that we might glorify His Holy Name in all that we say and think and do.
God's Peace - Pr. J

Saints
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
(Rev 7:9-17 KJV)
Today we remember all the saints that have gone before us and those who still dwell among us. To think that saints are dead people (as many do) is a grave misunderstanding. Saints are those people whose robes have been made white in the blood of the lamb. No, this is not something that is done literally. We do not have to soak our clothes in the blood of anything. Nor can we do anything to become sanctified; to be made holy. Martin Luther's explanation of the third article of the Apostle's Creed reminds us that our sanctification (our sainthood) is the work of God the Holy Spirit.
III. The Third Article: On Becoming Holy
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the community
of the saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and an everlasting life. Amen.
Q. What does this mean?
A. I believe that I cannot come to my Lord Jesus Christ by my own
intelligence or power. But the Holy Spirit called me by the Gospel,
enlightened me with His gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true
faith, just as He calls, gathers together, enlightens and makes holy
the whole Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus in the one, true
faith. In this Church, He generously forgives each day every sin
committed by me and by every believer. On the last day, He will raise
me and all the dead from the grave. He will give eternal life to me
and to all who believe in Christ. Yes, this is true!It is God who makes us holy. We do not become holy by our good works; but, by the Spirit of Christ. Let us remember all of the saints: both the living and the dead who shared the word with us so that we might come to faith by the power of the Holy Spirit as well
