Speak The Truth!

"I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit—" (Rom 9:1 NIV)

"I am speaking the truth in Christ - I am not lying..." These words of St. Paul never fail to bring a smile to my face. I do believe that St. Paul was actually telling the truth. However, it reminds me of a young child swearing that they are telling the truth when they are not actually tell the whole truth. They are telling their own version of the truth which is not truth.

It is good when we can say with Paul I am speaking the truth, my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit. But, sadly that is not always the case. It is difficult to know when someone is actually speaking the truth and so we must depend upon the Holy Spirit within to help us to discern the truth. Not long ago someone who often chooses to make up their own version of the truth told me. "There are two sides two every story and then there is the truth." That probably is pretty true. But, in that particular case her side of the story was actually a third side and still not the truth.

Paul's truth in Christ, sometimes hurt people's feeling. The truth is not always pleasing to hear. It may make us many enemies; but, we must still speak the truth in love. Hurt feelings are nothing compared to a lost soul. May God help us to always speak with integrity for the good of those whom God loves.

Rejoice!

"Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean,

    was given her to wear."
                                          Rev 19:6b-8

We have a lot to rejoice in. St. John, exiled on Patmos for his faith, did not give up hope. St. Paul did not give up hope. The many saints before us never gave up hope. They looked to the day when they would be reconciled to God our Father and our Lord Jesus the Christ in the home that Christ prepared for us.

Life can be pretty confusing and tough at times. In tough times, it is well to remember, that today will pass and tomorrow will come whether we are here in this world or in the Kingdom prepared for us. For all who believe in Jesus and his gifts of forgiveness and salvation for us, life will go on. It is eternal.

By the blood of Jesus the Christ we have been reconciled to God and one another even now. So, rejoice and be glad and give God the glory! Give God the glory in all that you say and think and do. Whatever you do, do it as if to the Lord.

Whitewashed Tombs And Dead Bones

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." (Matt: 23:27-28 NIV)

One of the highlights of my visit to Ireland was going to be a visit to the beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. But, I did not find it so! It is a museum. Certain areas of the church are quite beautiful; but, if you step back for the bigger picture, it is quite cluttered with artifacts, statues, and unused chairs as well as other "stuff" being stored in open areas quite visible from the sanctuary. I was told that only one or two dozen worship in that sanctuary on any given Sunday. That huge sanctuary and it is empty!

Just because something or someone may look beautiful at first glance does not mean that they are truly beautiful or useful. Churches around the globe have become like museums; beautiful on the surface; but, on closer examination they have become very much like museums; devoid of life.

Not only have the buildings which we call churches become like tombs, devoid of life; so too are many who call themselves children of God. They do not find life in Christ. They seek life in this world. Alas, so many who would call themselves by the name of Christ have become like empty tombs because they prefer museums than living their lives in real relationship with God and one another. How the church looks; whether we "look" righteous, whether we "look" clean, with all the right furniture and all the right people have become the all important factors that go into building up the visible church. Beautiful hymns have all become like funeral dirges of long ago. Rather than the lifting up of what God has done for us in joyous or triumphant song; they have become devoid of hope. They are devoid of life.

Alas, the visible church on earth is full of bones of the dead and everything unclean! Turn to the Lord and worship Him and may God give life to all the dead bones.

Run The Race!

"Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.  Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one."  1 Cor 9:23-25

Before the sun comes up, I sometimes find myself thinking about running for exercise. Actually; lately, the thoughts tend more toward a real fast walk. This thinking about it doesn't burn me any calories though. It doesn't lose me any weight. It doesn't do my body any good. When I rise, I go about morning devotions and then to work. I can usually find a few minutes to exercise in the living room a couple of times a week. But, I always put off the running 'till another day. I do not exercise a lot of self-control or discipline when it comes to physical exercise.

St. Paul compared the discipline runners employ to the discipline that we need to exercise in order to be spiritually healthy so that when we finish the race here on earth we will receive the imperishable prize that has been prepared for us. We do not want any one to procrastinate and say "I'll get to know this Jesus you talk about, later. I'll have more time to follow him after I retire. I'll have more time to serve, tomorrow." For procrastinators, tomorrow rarely comes. Tomorrow may be too late. Today is the day to get to know Jesus and to live in his presence; in his Kingdom.

Jesus died for you. He died so that all people might live in the presence of God our Father for all eternity. What are you waiting for? The time is now. The Kingdom of God is at hand.

Proclaim The Gospel With Spiritual Fervor

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:10-11 NIV

As I grow older, I find myself pondering more and more about the time that I have wasted not being zealous in serving the Lord. We have been studying Paul's letter to the Romans in Bible Study on Sunday mornings. St. Paul's zealousness never fails to amaze me. And, even as his spiritual fervor amazes me; my past lack of it leaves me wondering how I or anyone who confesses Jesus could possibly be less enthusiastic about the Good News than he. No matter what trials or tribulations St. Paul endured; he did not become less ardent in his proclamation, he became bolder. Why then can we who suffer so little in comparison to the many who have given their life for the Gospel of Jesus be so lukewarm?

I wake up each morning completely aware of how lukewarm Christianity has become in so many churches; in so many homes. In the vision of St. John on Patmos, the angel of the Lord told him to warn the people of Laodicea:  "So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth." (Rev 3:16)

The church in many parts of this earth has become lukewarm. We are without spiritual fervor, except maybe on Sunday mornings. Often, during the rest of the week, our ego-driven false gods take center stage. Christianity is more than a Sunday morning ritual. It is a way of life. It is a way of being.

May God help us to be zealous in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord so that others may hear and believe.
