Have Not Seen Yet We Believe
John 20:19-31 KJV; 1st Sunday after Easter. Although we have not seen Jesus with our own eyes; we believe the testimony of those who did.

Not For The Fear Of Hell
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
(John 1:12-13 KJV)
I was reminded this week of something a confirmation student once asked me. That question was: "Why do I want to go to heaven?" Why indeed!? What brought this to mind was something I heard this week. Not a direct quote; but, what I understood this person to imply strongly was: "We need to repent so that we do not go to hell."
Hmmm.... Still knots in my stomach, days later, over that one! That reasoning is really hard for me to grasp for it certainly is not my reason for wanting "to go to heaven." You see, I am a child of God. We have a tremendous Father in heaven who truly loves us. By faith alone in Christ alone we have been reconciled to our Father in heaven. I love Him and I want to be in his presence every moment of every day. That why I want to abide in heaven.
On the night in which he was betrayed Jesus told the disciples that he would be leaving them; but, that they should not be worried. He was going to prepare a place for them in his Father's house; our Father's house. He told them:
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
(John 14:1-6)
The truth is humankind was kicked out of paradise for despising God's word. They did not listen to him. What a great loss that was! Humankind could no longer walk with God in the place he had prepared for humankind. But, through the sacrifice that Jesus made for us we can now live with God in paradise; in the heavenly kingdom.
It is not for the fear of hell that we should desire to go to heaven. It is for the opportunity to live in our loving Father's presence for all of eternity. After all, who doesn't want to love and be loved?

Blessed Are Those Who Believe By Faith Alone
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
(John 20:24-29 KJV)
He knew Jesus. He heard his promises that he would rise from the dead. He was there. Yet, Jesus' word had not been enough. Thomas doubted the resurrection. He did not believe the witness of the other disciples. He would not believe it unless he could see Jesus face to face.
Many today disbelieve that Jesus is risen from the dead because they have not seen him face to face. Well, we will all see him face to face one day. For better or worse we will all see him. Why wait for that day when you can know him and life with him today? Just because you yourself have not seen something does not mean that it is not true. There are just some things that we accept by faith alone based on the witness of others.
God grant you faith and a perpetual knowledge of the abiding presence of the living Christ in and with you.

Seeing Is Believing?

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
It has been said that "seeing is believing." That seems to have been true for those first followers of Jesus. His disciples were locked up in a room out of fear that the authorities would come for them as well on that first day of the week. Even though the women and Peter and John had seen the empty tomb, they did not quite grasp that he had risen from the dead. Even though Jesus had told them that he would rise again they did not believe it until he appeared to them in person.
Thomas would not take the word of the other disciples who had seen him alive and well. He had to see Jesus to believe that he had risen from the dead. It is quite a story, after all!
But, the eye witness testimony of those disciples and others has been carried down through the generations for almost 2000 years and here we are believing without seeing. We come to faith by hearing the testimony of those first eye-witnesses. St. Paul in his letter to the Romans wrote: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Rom 10:17)
"... blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." (John 20:29b)

The Way
"Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (Psalm 37:5 KJV)
Last week, I was asked by a friend for directions to my house from Jacksonville. I told her to put my address into the GPS on her phone as I had no clue where in Jacksonville she was and no idea how to get to my home from where she was. I always use a GPS when traveling. Other than Highway 95, I really couldn't name any of the other roads that one might need to travel on.
I was also in Jacksonville yesterday. Although, I've been to the exact location many times over the last few years, I still use my GPS. I know my way to where I was going and I know my way home from there. But, I still use my GPS because one can never know when there might be a detour due to construction or an accident. I trust it to show me the way to where I am going. But, I also know the GPS system is not 100% reliable. I have been led to a few dead ends and wrong addresses over the years.
There is one though who can lead us faithfully through deserts and wildernesses. He will lead us through dark valleys and over high mountains. He will lead us on the way because he is the way. We can trust Jesus to show us the way 100% of the time. Listen to him and follow him in the way that he has shown you.
"And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

A Light Unto My Path
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
(Psalm 119:105 KJV)
It is imperative for the Christian to hear and to study the word! The word and the Word who is Jesus the Christ will show us the way we are to go. Of course then, as I have recently been reminded that God has given us free will. That is true. We can choose not to go to the Father. We can choose to not accept that free gift of eternal life in His presence. We can choose to deny God. But, for those who desire to live in the eternal joy and peace found in the presence of God hear the words of Jesus given to Thomas and to you:
Thanks be to God that the light, who is Jesus the Christ, has come to show us the way to our Father's house, to his presence!

There Is Jesus!
Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher).
John 20:16 NIV
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Yesterday, a memorial service was held for a dear friend of mine. Years ago, she and I studied books together at the local swimming pool. We prayed a bit. We studied a bit. We swam a bit. We had lunch together afterwards.
One of the books we read together was "Practicing the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence. There was nothing that Brother Lawrence would have preferred to do than to be in the presence of God and so his life was lived as though he were.
After Jesus' resurrection, Mary and Thomas both had those "aha" moments when they recognized that they were in his presence. Mary, full of sorrow at the tomb and who shows up? There is Jesus. He is standing there. He is alive!
Thomas was quite sure Jesus was dead and not coming back. But, there he is in a locked room with his fellow disciples of Jesus and who shows up? There he is! There is Jesus standing among them. He is alive!
Jesus lives! As each year passes I spend more time in the Word and more time practicing the presence of God, talking and listening and walking with God, this God whom I cannot see as Mary or Thomas saw. After all; is there anyone more pleasant and comforting to be with than Jesus? As each year passes the more often I am able to experience those "aha" moments when I feel the real presence of God with me. Something will happen and I think: there he is still working among us. That has to be Jesus! Here he is! He lives!
We cannot see him as Mary or Thomas saw him; but, we can and do live in his presence even today as we look to the day when we will see him face to face. We will seem him with our own eyes.
May You always be cognizant of God's presence no matter where you are or what you are doing.
