Idleness Destroys The Home

Photo by Pr. Judy Mattson

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through. (Eccl 10:17 KJV)

I was raised to appreciate the opportunity to work and accomplish something. I learned to actually enjoy working as most Saturdays and many evenings were filled with the whole family taking care of household chores. We were doing things together. When chores were being done no one was alone in doing it. No one was sitting on the couch or taking a nap while others took care of things that needed to be done to keep the home and any other property in good condition. We kept the house going as a family.

Both of my parents worked hard to provide for all of us and to teach us to do the same. My mother, especially, had her ideas of how to take care of a home. We never went to bed with dirty dishes in the sink. Bedding was washed every week if not every other week and; yes, after we took them off of the clothes line outside we even ironed sheets and pillow cases. Our home was always clean. The lawn was always mowed in the summer and sidewalk shoveled in the winter. I learned to plant a garden, to fish, to gather wild fruits, mushrooms, and greens and then to preserve what could be canned. I was taught that it takes much work to have things. I was also taught it would take manual labor to maintain those things. All of this takes time and effort.

I have learned over the years that amassing too much stuff may take more time and effort than one actually wants to spend on maintaining the stuff. Sometimes, purchasing things we don't need to live on kills the opportunity to actually live life.

In the end we must count the cost of actually having stuff that we don't need and won't want after we have it for a short while. Is it worth working endless hours to pay off an expensive cell phone when an Android will do the job?  And, if we commit to purchasing and making payments on frivolous stuff will we be able to afford to fix the vehicle that gets us to work to buy the things we actually need to survive?

There is much work to be done just to survive. Slothfulness will not get you very far. In the end everything that you have that you so desired will be lost when you cannot afford to take care of it or after you decided that naps are more preferred than taking care of the property that you have been blessed with.

The destruction of a home from laziness does include more than the physical property. Consider how not caring for and tending to relationships will also destroy the home. Relationships not tended to will rot away. They will fall when they are not taken care of.

May we all be filled with a desire to be good stewards of all that we have so that we might produce fruits to the glory of God.

Christmas Love And Peace!

May we all live in peace and love not just on Christmas; but,
every day!
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Merry Christmas!

I am running real late today on my blog. We are with two of our grandchildren in S.C.. There has been a lot of present opening and playing with gifts going on; plus a nap, too!

Christmas is a very special day and not just for the family get togethers and for the children excited over their gifts. It is most special because it a very major reminder of the humility of our Savior, Jesus Christ. True God, he came to us a true man, as a baby born in a most humble setting; in a barn. Born not to nobility; but, to a simple young woman wedded to a carpenter.

Today is a reminder to the world; to all who would follow him, that it's not about things, it's about love for humanity. As this baby grew up and was willing to humble himself on the cross that we might live in God's gracious presence for all eternity; we too ought to be able to humble ourselves to at least attempt to love others as he loves no matter who they are.

May the love and peace of God be with us always.

Time Management

Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. (1 Peter 5:8-9 NRSV)

Be prepared. I am really big into time management. It takes a bit of self-discipline; but, it is well worth it in the long run. I understand that people can get a bit frustrated with me for being so persistent in wanting to plan ahead; to organize my time and schedule.

I like to organize my time. My desk is not always very organized. But, I do like my time to be organized so that if an emergency comes up I can rearrange my schedule in order to meet that emergency head on and still stay on track with those other things that I have planned to do. I also like my time to be organized so that if I decide to do something spontaneous (like take a nap or jump in the kayak) I can easily find time to rearrange my schedule a bit and just do it.

For instance, I begin working on my sermons on Sunday after worship or early Monday morning. I do this just in case an emergency comes up on Friday or Saturday and I won't have time. I like to be prepared for Sunday morning and to be ready for anything else that may jump in front of me in need of my attention.

The devil is always going to be there looking for ways to get the upper hand on you; to distract you from the path you should be following. He will throw many temptations in your path so that you are side-tracked from doing what is good and right for you and for the people around you.

Discipline yourselves and keep alert so that you might be prepared for the walls and miry bogs the devil might set before you to lead you on a path around them that you should not enter on.

Be prepared; discipline yourself; keep alert!

The Goodness Of The Lord

I believe that I shall see the goodness
   of the Lord
   in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
   be strong, and let your heart take
   courage;
   wait for the Lord!
                     (Psalm 27:13-14 NRSV)

I wait. There are days when I'd really like to take a very long nap while I'm waiting to see the goodness of the Lord. It is on those days I do something that seems to be very cliché. I count my blessings. There is much goodness to be thankful for when we take the time to change our focus from what seems bad to what is good in our lives and in the lives of the people around us.

Yes, sometimes it takes a lot of courage and strength to keep moving forward; to face the evil in the world. But, exposing evil is sometimes required so that the darkness can be lifted and we can see the goodness of the Lord.

And, sometimes it will take some waiting on our part in order to see His goodness even through those things which we deem to be most evil.

Thanks be to God for "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." (Rom 8:28)
