Look To The One Who Dwells In The Heavens
Psalm 123 KJV
Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

Look to the One who created you in the time of trouble. Look to the One who created all things in times of peace. Look to the one who dwells in the heavens. He has shown us mercy. He will have mercy upon us. Wait upon Him. Trust not in the world or anything else in the heavens or on earth to rescue you. God is with you. He can. He will rescue you.
Thanks be to God for through faith in Christ we have been saved!

Love In Deed And Truth
"My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." (1 John 3:18 KJV)
I have witnessed a lot of not so loving actions over the past year. It amazes me that so many profess that we have to have more unity and love; that if we love we will strive for justice for all people. When in fact they speak of love; but, their actions show otherwise.
Riots that included damage to personal property of others and attacks on others do not in anyway show love of neighbor nor does it show justice. Calls for unity while verbally attacking people who do not agree with one's principals or lack of principals. Verbal attacks can very well be deeds as they are attacks against the spirit. Physically or verbally attacking those who will not compromise their beliefs by encouraging harmful and or sinful behavior is not in any way a show of love. It does do much harm.
We can talk about unity, peace, justice, and love 'till the cows come home. Yet, if out of one side of the mouth we speak of these things and out of the other side comes hatred and false accusations we are only deceiving ourselves when we claim that we love. But, we are not and cannot deceive God regarding the state of our hearts. Until we actually start acting in love toward one another it is just fruitless talk and often harmful speech.
Jesus showed his love and mercy for us by dying on the cross for us. May God help us to love one another not just with words but in deed and truth. And, may God help us to not compromise the truth. Only when we live in the truth will there be any real semblance of peace and love. We need to quit justifying our sinful behavior by trying to put the blame on others.
"Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him."
(Prov 16:5-7)
A man's way pleases the Lord when he shows love by acting upon both mercy and truth.

Pride and Humility
Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
(Prov 16:18 NRSV)
Pretty much most Christians understand how destructive pride can be. Christians strive to avoid it or at least strive to cover their pride with a sort of humility. But, that humility in itself often belies our pride. False humility can be pretty transparent. When a person is consistently bowing to others and sweet talking them it can be pretty nauseating. When a person is constantly apologizing and begging forgiveness without ever changing the way that they say things; the way that they do things; or the way that they treat others, it is usually pretty apparent that they are only apologizing to feign humility in order to appear innocent of being arrogant. Humility is sometimes feigned to cover the fact that what a person does is actually to serve themselves and not others. Humility is sometimes feigned in order to cover one's pride.
Be careful, for this pride; this feigned humility; this haughtiness, may be hidden from our brothers and sisters in Christ for awhile; but, it cannot be hidden from the Lord. Pride will be the wall that we build between ourselves and the Lord. Pride will be our destruction. It will cause us to fall.
May God help us all to recognize what is genuine humility and what is pride within ourselves.

Faith Alone!
"Look at the proud!
Their spirit is not right in them,
Their spirit is not right in them,
but the righteous live by their faith."
Habakkuk 2:4.
Habakkuk 2:4.
Wisdom sometimes comes with age (but, not always). It never ceases to amaze me how some of our eldest brothers and sisters in Christ are able to humble themselves and confess their sins. These sins that they confess seem to pale in comparison to some of the sins that others do not confess. They have acquired or have been gifted the ability to understand that all sin no matter whether we consider them big or small sins are an abomination before God. All sin threatens to build a wall between ourselves and God.
We understand that none of us are without sin; that we are made righteous only be faith in the Son of God who died for us. There is nothing that we can do to save ourselves. There is nothing that we can do or avoid doing in order to stand before God and be proclaimed innocent.
We are saved by faith alone, in Christ alone. Sometimes, it just takes years of being humbled in order to be humble enough to know that we are indeed sinners and are saved by faith alone. This is a gift of God.

Love Does Not Fail

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." (1 Cor 13:4-8a NIV)
One of the most often requested readings for weddings is found in 1 Corinthians 13. It is good advice for two people who are about to commit their whole earthly lives to one another. Love does not fail. However, due to our sinful natures we often fail to love. Marriages fall apart because we love ourselves or someone or something else more than the one we have committed to spend the rest of our lives with. Marriages are not the only relationships that fail due to a lack of love. Relationships with family, friends, community also fail and bring much sorrow because of a lack of love.
The greatest gifts, says St. Paul, is love. God has given us love in His Son, Jesus Christ. There is no greater love than a love that is willing die for others, as Jesus died for us. We respond to His love by sharing that love with others. The love from God does not fail. It can move mountains and crush molehills. The love of God inspires us to inspire others with His love.
Live life! Share His love!

Love
Love is not self-serving; rather, it is about serving others. In other words love is not all about me. That word "love" gets thrown around a lot. There are many kinds of love. We love our friends in one way. We love our spouses in another way. We even love our enemies and pray for them. Whomever it is that we love, we ought to understand that genuine love calls for a commitment. Genuine love will make sacrifices for those whom we claim to love even as God sacrificed His only begotten Son on the cross because of His great love for us.
Love is not just a word. Love is action. It calls us to put the welfare of others before us. It calls us to take up our cross and follow Jesus for the sake of others that God who loves us so deeply might be glorified.
Love the Lord your God. Love others in the Spirit of Christ.
