The Mouth Of A Fool Invites Ruin

Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

Rulers (as well as the media) who buy into and promulgate lies destroy communities. They can destroy entire countries. They care not for the people that they destroy. Leaders who keep moving on their chosen path of destruction in attempts to show that they are the leader and can do what they what because they are in charge are risking the very people that they have been called to defend.

No one know for sure how many people died yesterday in the bombings at Kabul.  The media kept reporting twelve or thirteen. I did not see any report nor did I hear any of the national media ask (other than the Wall Street Journal) ask how many of the allies  and their families that assisted our military over the last twenty years were killed. This morning I am finally seeing the reports of over ninety civilians. But, no one seems to have asked yet if there were any Americans among those civilians. Maybe someone asked and I just didn't hear that one instance. For all of the news releases we're hearing; we're not hearing much new. They are not being as transparent as they promised they would be. 

We are hearing that the Taliban is working with us. They will keep Americans and our allies safe until August 31st. I suspect our leaders think we should actually believe this and trust that this will happen. Do you? Are you willing to trust a terrorist organization that just overthrew a government?

It is not always just the words that we need to listen to. As a country we need to learn to watch their body language as they speak; how they respond to stress; and what they actually do.  Their words may convey an amount of compassion for others but their movements; their actions, do not.

May God protect the people who are subject to rulers who rule only for their own interests.

Armor of God

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Sometimes we forget that the battle is not against each other; but, against the spiritual forces that attack every one of us. We forget and when we forget we neglect to pray even for our enemies that they might change (repent) and receive the peace of the Lord so that we all might live in peace; so that we all might live in the joy of His presence.

Yes, the evil one does manifest himself in humankind and we do find ourselves in conflicts and wars. To protect those who cannot protect themselves there are times that we must engage in physical warfare. But, even in those times the spiritual warfare must be paramount. We can never forget to wear the armor that the Lord has provided us. We are to at all times and in places wear the belt of truth, a breastplate of righteousness, shoes to help us go out and proclaim the gospel of peace, the shield of faith so that the evil one's arrows will be thwarted, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). (Eph 6:14-18) Even as we venture forth wearing this armor we should always and in all places remember to pray.  Pray in the Spirit that we do the Lord's will and not our own. Pray that God is with us; that, the battle might be won.

Get Up and Go Share The Light Of Christ

And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

"And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment."

Arise!  The ruler's daughter was ill even to the point of death. Everyone around her thought she was dead. But, then Jesus took her by the hand and bid her to rise. Immediately, she rose and she walked.

Are you dead? Are you sleeping? Is your bed or your couch where you spend your days? Are you not fruitful that the Lord that the glory of the Lord might be seen by others?  Rise and go forth sharing the Good News of the Kingdom of God for all people through Jesus Christ.

"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee." (Isaiah 60:1-2)

The light, who is Jesus the Christ, has come to all people. But, not everyone sees it.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matt 5:16)

The Fight Is Against The Devil (Not Your Neighbor)

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

The lockdowns around the country this past year put a curtail on a lot of Christian gatherings whether for worship or for fellowship. There were many congregations who refused to shut down their worship services. There were also many who completely closed there doors; some opting to do virtual worship on the world wide web. This had it advantages as it reached many people who were not attending worship prior to the lockdowns. It also had many disadvantages. 

As congregations are attempting to get back to worship and fellowship as it was prior to March of 2020 many are finding that the devil had his way in separating us from one another and even turning us away from God to focus on lesser things. These lesser things for some congregations sadly are about numbers. When someone gets out of the weekly habit of worshiping it is not so easy to get back into the habit of regularly gathering for worship and fellowship.  Attendance goes down and consequently so do the offerings. When finances are hit divisiveness often follows. It's got to be someone's fault; must be the pastor's! Could be that person in the back pew that offended your neighbor. Who knows. Lots of excuses and finger pointing arise when the budget isn't being met.

In the pursuit of raising those numbers the word can end up being compromised in order to appease the itching ears and bring back the numbers. When we focus on entertaining people in order to bring back the attendance and offerings we tend to lose the focus on what worship is about. It is about worshiping God and about hearing His word. It is not about making the congregation feel good about themselves. It is, of course, a relief to know that God has forgiven our sins and made us to be His children by faith in our reconciliation to Him through the Good News of Jesus the Christ.  The faith that we have that we have been saved is found solely in the work of the Christ for us. It has nothing to do with any decisions we have made or any good things we have done. We cannot earn our salvation; therefore, worship is about worshiping the one who earned it for us. It is not to enflame the egos of the congregation. It is not to please "itching ears!"

These are all tricks of the devil to diminish our faith. This is not the time to point fingers or blame others for the state of your congregation rather stand firm against the wiles of the devil.  Do not attack your brother of sister in Christ. If you're going to point fingers then point them at the devil and stand firm, wearing the  whole armour of God:  gird your loins with truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness; shod your feet with the gospel of peace; take the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God and pray... As a warrior for Christ put on the armour of God and pray; pray in Jesus' name that the devil depart and leave you, your loved ones, and your congregation alone. Defeat the wiles of the devil. Attacking your brothers or sisters in Christ only empowers the devil and his minions. He is smiling as he undermines your commitment to sharing the Gospel of peace in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Healed By Jesus

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

Peter and John were interrogated by the cohorts of the high priest as to how they healed the lame man. They took no credit for the healing. It was simple. The lame man was healed by him whom they had crucified, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

This man who begged for a living because he could not work was not given silver or gold. He was given life with the opportunity to earn his own keep. He was given the opportunity to walk and to live life more abundantly. He was certainly most grateful for this gift as evidenced by entering the temple walking and leaping and praising God.

In Christ Jesus, we too are made whole. Let us rejoice and be glad for the precious gift of life in him.

An Example Of Service

He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

The followers of Jesus sometimes referred to him as "teacher."  He taught not only with words but by example. 

Before they ate on the night that the disciples had their last passover meal with Jesus he knelt down and washed their feet. Peter thought that was a bit over the top. He felt that kneeling before them and taking hold of their dirty feet was beneath Jesus. Jesus disagreed. 

Jesus, the Son of God, was an example of service for the sake of others. He came to earth to serve humankind. Ultimately he served us by dying on the cross for our sake; for our sins. He saved our lives by giving his own for us.

He is the ultimate example of leading by serving others. Rulers are called to lead by serving others not themselves; not their own egos. 

      

"But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."

The Battle

Life can definitely be a battle. All kinds of things come against us. There are periods of time when it seems like it's a daily struggle to stay afloat. In frustration and anger, we may want to strike back at the people that it appears to be coming from. But, there is a better way. 

We cannot overcome anything or anyone without the help of God. In order to do battle, we must put on the armor that God provides us with remembering that it is not flesh and blood that we battle with but spiritual forces in the dark realms who wish to undo you. 

The battle is real and we must engage or succumb to the enemy.

Praise the Lord for Life!

Psalm 148:7-12

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
stormy winds that do his bidding,
you mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,
wild animals and all cattle,

small creatures and flying birds,

kings of the earth and all nations,

you princes and all rulers on earth,
young men and women,
old men and children.

Every breathing creature upon this earth lives because of the very breath of God. He said: Let there be... and, there it was. 

How much do we appreciate the gift of life that He has given us? Do we spend more time lamenting our lot in life and drowning our sorrows, rather than thanking and praising God for the gifts that we have been given?

Live life! God gave us life for a reason and it was not to destroy it. Live life in relationship with God and enjoy the precious gifts that He has given you. Live life in a good relationship with all of God's creation and enjoy the life that you have received.

May all of God's creatures give thanks and praise the life that He has given us here on earth and in the Kingdom that has no end.

Armor of God

"Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."  Eph 6:11-12 NRSV

Discernment By The Holy Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
    the things God has prepared for those who love him—

these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

Others may not have a clue to the mysteries that the followers of Jesus comprehend and sometimes we may forget that they don't. We expect them to understand what we might even call "common sense." But, it is not common sense that leads us to follow Jesus and to discern God's will for us. It is the Spirit of God who does this.

By the Spirit of God we are united in Christ. We are one. We who are of the Body of Christ have the mind of Christ. He is our head. Is it any wonder that we should be able to discern the things that come from God?

My constant prayer is that God would open eyes, ears, hearts, and minds of all whom we love so that all people might discern God's gracious and loving will for them and for the world around them.

Praise Ye The Lord!

"Praise the Lord from the earth,

God is God of all of creation. He has made all things marvelously. Let us intentionally look around us today so that we might be better able to understand his awesome sovereignty; to grasp more firmly the reality of His gifts to humankind and all of creation. God, alone, is worthy to be praised. Let us all praise the Lord!
