And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
(Rev 6:9-11 KJV)
It is one of those mornings when I ask again, "How long, O Lord...?" How many times have we heard or even asked ourselves, "How much longer, Lord?"
As the fifth seal is opened, St. John see the multitude of souls of those who had been killed for the word of God. They want to know how much longer before their blood will be avenged. They want to know how much longer they must wait for the judgment of the inhabitants of the earth. They want an end to the pain and suffering; the persecution of God's children on earth.
They want to know and so do we. When will it end? It will end they were told when the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters in Christ, have been killed just as they had been. Persecution and unjust killing of God's children will continue until the end. No one; but, God can tell when the full number of martyrs will join those already dressed in white robes?
When will it end? We cannot know; but, we can trust that God does. Therefore, we wait with patience and hope and faith in His promises.
God's Peace - Pr. J
