Enjoy Work
"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." Psalm 16:3
I have always attempted to teach my children and grandchildren to enjoy the work that they do. Work is inevitable. We must work to eat, to have shelter, to have clothing; and, if you really must want a lot of nice things, you must really put a lot of effort into earning that "stuff." We spend a huge portion of our lives working so we may as well enjoy it. Making a game of doing house or yard chores and doing it together helps it to me more fun.
As young people begin planning for what kind of life-long career they would like to pursue, they ought to consider what it is that they will enjoy doing. Do you enjoy helping people? How about computers or working with animals? There are so many career choices in the world today, it is impossible to comprehend them all. Whatever it is that you love to do; whatever talents that God has gifted you with; follow that path.
God has a plan for you. He calls you to serve him according to the gifts He gifts you. Whether it is a talent and desire to be a doctor or a hostess; God provides the opportunities to be trained in the way He would have you go. And... don't forget to commit your work to the Lord. Do all things that they might glorify your Father in heaven and you will not only do them well; but, enjoy doing them.

Pray with faith
"Whatever you ask for in faith, you will receive." Matt 21:22
Pray, pray, pray and pray some more. We must be persistent, trusting in God that He will work things out according to His will and in His time. God does indeed answer prayers. Sometimes, it takes a little longer than we would like. Sometimes, it takes a whole lot longer than we would like. But, He does answer them. The answers don't always come in the way that we would like, either. But, they do come. God is good and "we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." Rom 8:28
I do love Him. God is good, all of the time!

Walk In Integrity!
The righteous walk in integrity—
happy are the children who follow them!
A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes."
My grandchildren are growing older and I am growing old. One word my grandchildren have heard from me an awful lot over the years is "integrity." I have admonished them many times to "walk with integrity" and to "speak with integrity." That is; to not embellish stories so that the stories fall apart once the details of the story begin to be questioned and to also not be creating drama for drama's sake.
Although; there has been the exceptions, I usually do not remind anyone other than my grandchildren to walk and talk with integrity. But, that is not because I don't want to. I simply don't feel that it is my place or that it will do any good. My grandchildren, though, I have major amounts of hope for so I remind them of the way the Lord would have them go so that they might have peaceful and fruitful lives. The "others" usually just get the "eye." My grandchildren also know about the "eye." Many times over the years, my eldest granddaughter has asked me for no apparent reason at all: What?" I have usually responded, "I didn't say anything." She complains that I looked at her with that "eye." That is usually when I start wondering and questioning what she is up to; what she is planning that she doesn't want me to know about. I do this because I care about her life and her future and not just life in this world; but, in the Kingdom to come.
The righteous are those who are cleansed by the blood of Jesus and because he abides with and in them, they will desire to walk in integrity, to walk in the way of his truth. Happy are the children who follow those who walk in integrity. Happy are the children who follow Jesus.
May God keep you in his truth, talking and walking in integrity.

Sing Songs of Thanksgiving!
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God." Col 3:15 NRSV
Sometimes, it seems that no matter how much we share the Word of God and His love it reaches deaf ears. It is often met with rudeness and even anger. There are many who just do not know how to react to genuine love.
What to do about this? We are to continue sharing the Word with all who will listen. Do not be afraid of slander or any kind of vicious attacks. Rather, continue to share the word of Christ which dwells in you richly and sing songs of thanksgiving to the Lord, our God.
Remember that you are a child of God and He will be with you always, no matter what befalls you.

You Know The Truth! Live In It!
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:21 NIV
Those who know God; who know the truth, and ignore it tend to try my patience just a bit. They get into trouble because they have ignored the truth of God. They get into trouble for following after and spending their time and money worshipping false gods. They not only do this themselves; but they also approve and teach others to reject and/or ignore God to everyone's detriment. They get into trouble and then they wonder why.
The why is because they follow trouble. They worship it. Chaos and drama are a way of life. For those who want peace; there is a way. God has given us a way. Quit ignoring Him. Stop rejecting the Prince of Peace, for peace can be found only in living in relationship with Jesus the Christ, who is our peace. You want trouble to go away; then depart from doing what is evil and glorify God. Evil begets evil. Steer clear!
You know the truth. You know the way. You know how to live life. Willful sin is not the way. Willfully ignoring and rejecting the truth of God is not the way. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. (John 14:6) Quit suppressing the truth and embrace it; that you, too, might have abundant life.

Rejoice!
"Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear."
Rev 19:6b-8
We have a lot to rejoice in. St. John, exiled on Patmos for his faith, did not give up hope. St. Paul did not give up hope. The many saints before us never gave up hope. They looked to the day when they would be reconciled to God our Father and our Lord Jesus the Christ in the home that Christ prepared for us.
Life can be pretty confusing and tough at times. In tough times, it is well to remember, that today will pass and tomorrow will come whether we are here in this world or in the Kingdom prepared for us. For all who believe in Jesus and his gifts of forgiveness and salvation for us, life will go on. It is eternal.
By the blood of Jesus the Christ we have been reconciled to God and one another even now. So, rejoice and be glad and give God the glory! Give God the glory in all that you say and think and do. Whatever you do, do it as if to the Lord.

Listen to the Storm Warnings!
Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. Acts 27:9-11 NIV
The sailors did not listen to Paul when he warned them that it was to dangerous to set sail. They set sail anyway and found themselves in the midst of the raging storm that Paul had warned them about. For days they were battered about. They threw their cargo overboard to keep from sinking. Finally, they are ready to listen to Paul. But, is it too late? They ran their ship aground, as he advised, and ultimately their lives are spared. God is with them. He has plans for Paul. He wants Paul to stand trial before Caesar in order for him to testify about Jesus to Caesar and the court..
When we find ourselves in the midst of storms because we failed to heed the warnings about the direction we were heading in, it is not too late. Listen to God. Listen to where He would have you go and what He would have do. God has plans for you! He will do all to ensure that His plans are carried out. But, you must listen to Him!

Blessed Thanksgiving!
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my
whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever."
Psalm 86:12 NRSV
Give thanks for the thorns in our lives. That was the theme for the homily last night at our Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service. God works all things for the good of those who love Him!We often forget to give thanks to God when things are going great. But, we rarely give thanks to God when things seem to be going not so great. We should at all times and in all places give thanks to God for all that He has given us.
We give thanks in many ways. Last night we gave thanks not only with the words of our lips; but, by our thank offerings. The congregation was asked to bring to the altar, as their thank offering, an offering of non-perishable food to be donated to the Food Pantry (Resource Center) in Bunnell, Florida. Thanks be to God for the opportunity and privilege to feed His sheep. Members of Christ Lutheran will serve at the Food Panty in January and July of 2018 distributing food to those in need. This service is something that they are excited about having the opportunity to do year after year as members of Christian Women United.
Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to God for all that He has given us. We give thanks that Jesus was willing to give himself as a sin offering for us; that we might be forgiven our sins and be reconciled to God, our Father and to our neighbors. We give thanks for the opportunity to gather around the table with our family and friends; although, we ought to consider that it would not hurt us one bit to gather more often than Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, with them for a meal. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for the opportunity to serve Him and our neighbors: to pray for and heal the sick; to feed the hungry; to shelter the poor. It is an opportunity and a privilege to serve the Lord. For that, we give thanks.
May the peace of the Lord be with you as you give thanks to God for all that He has done.

Prayers: Curses or Blessings
He went up from there to Bethel; and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go away, baldhead! Go away, baldhead!” When he turned around and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys." 2 Kings 2:23-24 NRSV
Listening to people curse usually causes me to feel just a little ill. Hearing God's name used recklessly makes me a little more than anxious. I hear words come out of people's mouths and I wonder if they realize that God is listening. When we desire that someone be harmed and we think or speak it; they are not just harmless words. Every word, whether it is a blessing or a curse, is like a prayer before God.
The story of Elisha cursing the boys and the bears coming to retaliate against them for disrespecting and bullying God's prophet is one of my favorites. This story makes more than a few people uncomfortable to know that God would answer this prayer (curse) in such a devastating fashion. It causes me to wonder if Elisha had any clue that God would respond in such a dramatic fashion or did the curse simply slip from his lips in a moment of anger or fear?
God doesn't normally send bears to protect His prophets. But, there is no doubt that He is with all who serve Him and He listens to their pleas. Be careful then of what words slip through your teeth. It is up to you whether they be the words of a bully, a curse in God's name, or if they be the words of a blessing; God hears it all. Be careful who you curse. Be careful what you pray for.

In Toil There Is Profit
"In all toil there is profit,
but mere talk leads only to poverty."
Proverbs 14:23
"Are you a Finn?" That was a strange question to be asked by a supervisor. But, that is exactly what I was asked years ago as I worked on a production line in a sewing factory. I had laughed and asked him how he could know that as I was living in North Carolina where there were very few people of Finnish descent. I knew of only one other. The supervisor was not of Finnish descent himself. He said he guessed that because of my work ethic. At the time, the company I worked for was laying me off and paying me unemployment one or two days every week because the particular station I worked at would run out of work by Wednesday or Thursday. In the history of the factory no one had ever made production at my station until that time.
I am still not sure how he would guess my ethnicity as I know a lot of people today of this same ethnic background who do not like to work and who will go out of their way to avoid it. I do not believe that ethnicity has much to do with our particular work ethics. Our work ethics are not necessarily dictated by our gene pool; but, has more to do with our environment.
I was taught at an early age that in order to live; in order to eat; in order to have shelter and heat, we must work. We must take care of responsibilities. We probably spend around one third of our entire lives working so we may as well do it well. We may as well throw ourselves into it and enjoy it.
Raising our sons, I would often make games out of household chores. We would work together so that the chores we had to complete would be more enjoyable for all. There is profit in our toil. Sometimes, it is merely to survive and to survive well. Other times it is so that we can share fruitful time with others.
Whatever we do, let us do it well that the work of our hands might glorify our Father in heaven.

Give The Gift Of Love
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. (1 Cor 13:1-3 NIV)
I began receiving pre-Black Friday online shopping advertisements over a week ago. I haven't begun to think about shopping for Christmas presents. The reality is that everyone that I give gifts to has just about everything they need and almost everything that they want. Well, maybe not everything they want; but, everything I could possibly afford to give them.
The one gift that some of them have not received is faith in Jesus the Christ. It is not that God hasn't given them this awesome gift. After all; for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son as a gift for us. Jesus did; after all, die for all people. It is that some just seem to refuse the greatest gift of all; to be reconciled to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
As you consider what gifts to share with others this holiday season; consider sharing the greatest gift ever given to humankind. Consider sharing the Good News that others might hear and by the power of the Spirit of Christ, receive this gift of love and life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Do not hide this gift like that unwanted fruitcake in the back of the cupboard. Share it. Give the greatest gift of love.

He Is God
"I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes." (Psalm 36:1 NIV)
I will second that! God for many has become some sort of abstract pie in the sky. There is this idea that God does not judge. He will not vindicate his children. Everyone goes to heaven no matter which god(s) they serve in this world. God is just a nice guy.
God is, indeed, good. But, that goodness means that He also requires justice and sometimes justice doesn't feel so good to those who unjustly persecute others, to those who choose willfully to serve other gods. His goodness also means that he will vindicate his children. He will care for those who are persecuted and woe to those who do the persecuting. So, if you are one who likes to do whatever pleases yourself, no matter whom you harm just because it might feel good to you, you really need to rethink your position on who God is and what justice to Him might actually mean..
But, then again, those of you who are reading this blog regularly, probably already understand that God is Almighty. He is God. To those who may stumble upon this blog looking for something else, know this: "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." (Heb 4:12-13)
God is more than a fluffy marshmallow or a cloud. He is God. Creator of the universe. He gives life and He can take it away. I think that it would be most prudent to not just love Him, but to respect (fear) and honor Him! Put away the false gods. Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand!
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, Almighty God, "Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart. May the foot of the proud not come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away." (Psalm 36:10-11)

The Tree Of Life
To eat of the fruit of the tree of life is promised for all
who would believe.
|
And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. (Gen 3:22-24 NIV)
In the beginning humankind had access to the tree of life. The book of Genesis tells us that rather than eat from this tree of life, they were tempted and decided to eat of the tree which God had said would guarantee their deaths; the tree that God told them not to eat from. As a consequence they were kicked out of the garden in which it grew so that they would no longer have the opportunity to eat the fruit from the tree of life.
Those first people made an awful decision when they chose to listen to the serpent rather than God. The world has not changed much. We long for eternal life; yet, our sinful natures continue to steer us toward the very things that will bring us death. We often listen to the world rather than God.
But; because God so loved us all, He sent His only begotten Son, to be that tree of life for us. All who believe in Jesus will walk in the presence of God for all eternity.
In the last chapter and book of the Holy Scriptures we once again see the tree of life. (Rev 22) Jesus says “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood." (Rev 22:14-15) All who believe; all whose names are written in the book of life are granted access to the fruit of the tree of life in His Kingdom!
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.

Every Knee Shall Bow
Turn to me and be saved,
all the ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
By myself I have sworn,
from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness
a word that shall not return:
“To me every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear.”
all the ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
By myself I have sworn,
from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness
a word that shall not return:
“To me every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear.”
Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me,
are righteousness and strength;
all who were incensed against him
shall come to him and be ashamed.
are righteousness and strength;
all who were incensed against him
shall come to him and be ashamed.
Isaiah 45:22-24
In the end, every knee shall bow before the Lord God. Whether in reverence and thankfulness for all that God has done for us or in fear of what is to come because we turned our back on Him. We will all know that there is only One God and it is He who has offered us salvation. Let us trust in the Lord, the King of Kings, for our salvation! Do not wait for tomorrow to bow before Him. Honor Him today!

Afraid To Hear What The Lord Has To Say?
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." (Luke 9:23-24 NIV)
Are you one who prefers not to hear what the Lord has to say to you? Do you turn up the music and sleep with the television on rather than take the chance that God just might whisper in your ear and call you to follow Jesus?
I believe that it is the fear of hearing the truth that keeps many who claim to be Christians from gathering with brothers and sisters in Christ for worship weekly (or more often). They just may be afraid that in hearing His Word in the lessons or the preaching or even the hymns they may be called to step out beyond their own desires and follow Jesus.
And... we all know where Jesus leads us. He leads us to the cross. He calls us to die to ourselves so that we might live in him and that he might live and reach out to others through us. There is a great possibility that if we take the time to listen to God rather than the world around us that we might just be asked to make a few changes in our lives and no one really wants to do that.
I know that I have quoted Annie Dillard from her book "Teaching a Stone to Talk" in at least a few of sermons. Well, here it is again. And, yes, maybe we should know that in hearing His Word, God will call us to a place beyond ourselves and when He does we will not be able to return to our old way of living. Yes; indeed, it takes a bit of courage to hear God's Word and actually listen to him.
"It is madness to wear straw hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews. For the sleeping God may wake someday and take offense, or the waking God may draw us out to where we can never return." (Annie Dillard)
May God grant us the courage to listen to Him and then to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

His Blessings; His Peace
There are a lot of people hurting in this world. So much so that many are so lost in their own pain that they do not even consider that their neighbors; their loved ones might also be hurting.
What can we do to help? How do we reach out to others? How do we reach them? How do we get others to understand that the Lord desires that all people would receive his blessings and live in his peace? We cannot do a thing for anyone without the Lord's help. But, with him all things are possible.
Let us begin by asking God's blessings on others. Let us begin with prayer for and with others. Let us pray...
"The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." Num 6:24-26

The Light Of Christ
"Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matt 5:15-16 NIV)
Okay... so here's the deal. If we say we are Christian, then we have the light of Christ in us. Right? So, why aren't there more lights shining? There are; after all, a tremendous number of people who say that they believe. If there are so many that believe; why isn't the whole world lit up with the light and the love of Christ? If the light of Christ in you; then, let it shine.
May the light of Christ shine in and through you always so that others may also see and believe.

SIN
Not everyone wants to hear the truth. They will rally against Christian truth-tellers. They will accuse them of being unchristian-like. No one likes to hear that what they do is a sin. Well, Jesus was a truth-teller. He did not condone sin as some would have us believe. He was not a pushover as some would have us think.
Remember the money changer's tables in the temple that he turned over and then drove those making a profit in God's house out of the temple with a whip? (Matt 21:12; Mark 11:15; John 2:14-15) How meek and mild does that sound?
If you think your pastor or teacher is acting in a manner not befitting a Christian because they call a sin a sin; think again, please. When was the last time one of them actually told you to "get behind me Satan" because you rejected the word and will of God? (Matt 16:21-23; Mark 8:31-38) I can just imagine the reaction if I said that to someone. I confess. I am a wimp. I have thought it. I have even implied it. But, never actually had the courage to use those words (except with a person or two very close to me).
And... please, don't bother using the story of the woman who had been brought before him accused of adultery. No, he did not condemn her. But, he not only confronted her with her sins when he told her to go and sin no more; he confronted the sins of the Scribes and Pharisees when he told them that the one who was without sin should cast the first stone. No one cast that first stone. (John 8:1-11) We are all sinners. That doesn't make sin something to be ignored. Jesus did not ignore it. We ought not ignore it in ourselves or anyone else.
Jesus did not ignore sin. He was tough on sin. In fact, he was so tough on sin that he was willing to hang on that cross for us so that sin would have no power over us. (1 Cor 15:56, 57) Bearing the sins of the world; now, that takes courage! (Rom 5:7-9) Jesus was and is no pushover and he does not call his followers to be, either. He spoke the truth. He lived the truth. He is the truth.
Jesus died for our sins; that is true. St. Paul wrote to the church: "What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (Rom 6:1-3)

Let us all remember that before one accuses someone of being unchristian-like in order to justify their own sins; it would behoove them to read their Bible thoroughly so that they would get to know who Jesus really was and is and not just the verses that person might think justifies their own actions. Justification comes only through Jesus' death on the cross for you. It does not come by excusing yourself by pretending that sin is not a sin.
May God grant that we should acknowledge our sins and live so that we might glorify his holy name.

Patience
"I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." Eph 4:1-3
Here is Paul, in prison, begging the Ephesians to lead lives with humility, gentleness, and patience bearing with one another in love. Paul met his imprisonment not just with patience; but with joy that the Lord had opened many doors in that prison so that he could proclaim the Good News to those who would not otherwise hear.
Some of the things that we lose patience with are pretty trivial compared to the troubles others suffer in the world. It would be best to ignore these minor obstacles and just move on past or over them. Don't let them interfere with what God has called you to do. Some of these minor inconveniences can make big breaks in our relationship with God and with one another when we allow them to. Rather, we ought to take advantage of what might seem to be a hindrance; because, it just might be a door opening for you. Those hindrance just might be a blessing rather than a curse. Live life!
May God help us to wait patiently, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

For The Sake Of Others
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." John 15:12-13 NRSV
Jesus lay down his life not just for his friends. He did not have to sacrifice his life for us. He chose to. He chose to lay down his life for those who loved him as well as those rejected him and refused to live in the truth.
Today is Armistice Day. Armistice with Germany went into effect on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Today, we remember all Veterans of the many wars that this country has been involved in since our inception. It is for freedom's sake that our armed services generally find themselves in armed conflicts or war. It is not for their own sakes that they fight; but, for the sake of loved ones; friends; even enemies; for the sake of the whole they are willing to lay down their lives.
Today we give thanks for all who are willing to lay down their lives that others might live and lively freely.

Happy Birthday USMC & Martin Luther!
Marine Corps Birthday Party; Palm Coast, FL, 2016 |
Today, my husband and I celebrate two birthdays.
For 46 years, since my husband first joined the United States Marine Corps, we have been observing the birth of United States Marine Corps. Even though he is retired, we still continue to celebrate this birthday in some way with other Marines and their families. Today, even as I honor my husband and the birth of the United States Marine Corps today, I thank God for the birth of another mighty warrior, Martin Luther. His battle was against the devil and all of Satan's minions.. It was against the false teachings that the devil had introduced to the church at the time. There remains false teachings in the church on earth today. Let down your guard and the devil sneaks them right back in. The battle continues; the battle against forces that would dilute or change the word of God to the harm of all whom God has called; to the harm of all who unknowingly follow false teachers and prophets.
There is a battle being waged in two kingdoms: in this world and in the spiritual realms. Although the battles are waged in different kingdoms and are waged in very different manners; they are not totally separate, for the devil has chosen to bring the spiritual battle to the world around us in order to destroy our love for and our faith in the one true God; in order to destroy our love for humankind. Each of us must choose his battle or if he or she will even fight. May God be with, protect, and bless each and every warrior.
Happy Birthday!

Christians: Participants or Observers
This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph 5:14 NIV)
There is a huge difference between a member of a team and an observer. A team member takes some risks; now unless you are betting on your favorite team (which is really poor stewardship of what the Lord has provided you with!) fans or observers really don't take any risks. They sit in the stands or on their couches and watch. They watch as others are busy running the race or carrying the ball. Observers do not participate in life. They prefer to stay in lala land; half or fast asleep. In reality, that is what often happens to the person who lies on the couch for hours watching television; they fall asleep. They are dead to the real world around them. They are safe from having to participate; from having to live life.
And, so it is with way too many Christians. They are observers. They may be fans of Jesus. But, they are not members of the team. They are not players. They do not actually participate in the game. They are not members of the team. They are merely bystanders. In reality they are mere observers or fans of Jesus and not members of the team. They are not members of the Body of Christ. Members work together as a team. They don't sit back and watch the team. They do not sleep when the light is shining upon them. They do not hide in the darkness of their own dreams.
In Christ, we become one Body. But, it seems that some of the parts of the Body are missing in action. Your local congregation misses you. Jesus calls you to worship and serve the Lord as a member of the community of saints.
Members of the Body work and play as a team, with one purpose, because they are one. If you would be a follower of Jesus then get off of the couch, take up your cross, and follow him, participating in a life of worship and service to God and in service to one another. Wake up sleeper, rise from the dead and live life in Christ!

Pray Without Ceasing!
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thess 5:16-18 NRSV
There is so much to be thankful for. The reasons to rejoice never end because "we know that all things work together for good for those who love God." (Rom 8:28) Yet, we know that there among those whom we love who do not love God and so we pray without ceasing. We pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that they may be strengthened in their inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith, as they are being rooted and grounded in love. We pray that they may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that they may be filled with all the fullness of God." (Eph 3:16-19)
Because we love even those who do not love or know God, we will never stop praying for them. We will joyfully give thanks for we know that God hears our prayers and answers, according to His good will.

Are You Listening? There Is Only One God.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deut 6:4-7 NIV)
I do a lot of talking about both the law and of the gospel. I do a lot of preaching. But, there are times when I just have to shake my head and wonder if anyone is listening? Do they not understand the there is only one true God and that God is almighty; all powerful; all loving; all merciful? It is not wise; it is not a good thing to worship other gods; to put anyone or anything before our Creator and Redeemer. I simply have a difficult time understanding how anyone would refuse to love and serve the only God who can save them from sin, death, and the power of the devil. How could anyone not love someone who was willing to die for them? But, they are out there. There are multitudes who mock Jesus; who laugh and turn their back on him to go chasing after their boring and wimpy false gods. There are those who persecute the followers of Jesus. May God have mercy on them and open their ears, their eyes, and their hearts to see how they have damaged the lives of those whom they claim to love. They have no clue that God is with His children and He will bless His children regardless of what those who reject Him might devise against them. May God help them to see that they are choosing a life full of fear. They are choosing death over life even for themselves.
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart."
May our Father in heaven, forgive us for not loving Him as we ought; for not loving Him even as He loves us and He loves us so much that He was willing to send His only begotten Son to die for us. Are you willing to give up even such a small thing as your false gods for the love of the one true God?

What Motivates Meanness?
Psalm 70 NIV
Hasten, O God, to save me;
The Psalmist makes another plea for help. He prays to be saved from his enemy, again! David appears to have a lot of enemies. He faces much persecution and he faces it often.
Hasten, O God, to save me;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.
May those who want to take my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”
But as for me, I am poor and needy;
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Lord, do not delay
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Lord, do not delay
I often find myself wondering exactly why it is that so much of humankind thinks that it is necessary to bring ruin to others. I particularly have a hard time understanding, not so much the outright meanness, but the pervasive passive-aggressive verbal, mental, and emotional abuse that is so commonly inflicted upon others. What motivates people to be so hateful? I am not sure if they even have a clue how much they hurt others, by their self-centered life-styles. If they did, would it stop, would they stop? Or, would the meanness just get worse as they revel in their ability to persecute others?
The only thing that I can surmise is that they simply do not know the LORD. They may imply or even say that they are Christians, but the fruit does not bear witness to that claim. They know a little about Jesus, but they do not know Him. I cannot help but feel empathy for them. It must be a very lonely place that they are at. In the meantime, they continue to attack even those who love them.
So, for this morning, I think I shall pray: Hasten, O God to save our enemies, open ears, hearts, minds to a greater understanding of Your Word, Your good will for them and all people, that we all might be helped.
'The LORD is great!" (vs 4) He is greater than great! He is my help and my salvation. He is your help and your salvation!

Was It Fair?
“But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend.
Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the
same as I gave you. Don’t
I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious
because I am generous? So the last
will be first, and the first will be last.'” (Matt
20:13-16 NIV)
In the parable of the workers of the vineyard, there were those who complain that some received better wages than others. They complain that the wages are not given out fairly. Those who work for one hour receive the same payment as those who labor all day. In the end, Jesus' response is: “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matt 20:16)
The complaint of those who came first came; of those who thought they should get more of something than others should get, is not an unfamiliar story. We often hear and sometimes it is we who complain that we were there first. We did this. We did that. Why, oh, why is someone else getting the same pay as we are getting? We've been here working and serving much longer than others. Why, oh, why is he or she getting a promotion before me? I was here long ago. They were not? Why, is this or that person being put in a position of authority? Why are they being honored or awarded? I've earned it. They have not.
We often complain that life is not fair. What we think we
deserve, we do not always get. What we think should go to us sometimes goes to
others. Throughout scripture we read of people receiving what they have not
earned. God blesses whom He chooses to bless because He is God and usually the
one He chooses is the one who would be considered less than.
David was a mere shepherd boy. They youngest of many sons.
Yet, God chose him to be king; to rule over His people. Did this shepherd boy
deserve to be king? He was so young. What could he have possibly accomplished
for God to be calling him? But, God knew what David would do way before David
could even begin to fathom it.
Jesus was born in a barn to a very young woman. He was not
born into wealth. His family was not of any upper echelons of authority or
power. He came from a very average family. But, God chose that average family.
That young woman was chosen to bear incarnate God. Joseph, although we hear
very little about him, was chosen to be the earthly father of God's only
begotten Son. They did nothing in particular to deserve these high honors. Yet,
God chose them. For whatever reason, God decided to bless them with the
privilege of raising Jesus. And, the Son... What about Jesus? Did he deserve
what he got? Did he deserve; was it really fair that Jesus had to die for our
sins? He did nothing wrong. He was without sin. Yet, he took our places
and our punishment so that we might be reconciled to our Father in heaven.
Was it fair for one man to receive the penalty for the sins of the whole
world? He put himself last, humbled himself for us, and now is first in
the Kingdom of God. He reigns!
Life may not always seem like it's fair. God does not think
or act like we do. Even His justice is not like our justice. That is a
real good thing for us. He is much more merciful than we are. What seems right or just in our eyes, doesn't
necessarily make it just in God's eyes. Jesus says the last shall be first and
the first will be last. Something about that just doesn't seem right to us. But,
it is God's word. It is his plan for the good of all who love Him.
Thanks be to God, it is He who is in charge and not we.
God's Peace - Pr. J
